The Dodge Family Archive

Interesting items from the past several years

NOVEMBER 2007 - Earl F. Dodge, one of the three people who started the Dodge Family Association in 1981 and a member of the DFA Board of Directors, died very suddenly on Nov. 7, 2007, at the Denver Airport .To see the Obit that was in the Rocky Mountain News, click here.

Two mysteries have been solved because of our DNA project

The Dodge Family Association is offering a FREE LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP to whoever will do the research and PROVE the ancestry of Tristram Dodge. We have him settling in Block Island in 1660/61 and we know he was in Massachusetts for at least some time. If you think you might be interested in researching this for us, please contact Barbara Dodge.

We now have a section on the Military from America, England and Canada. If you want to add the name of a Dodge or Dodge descendent, contact us. Dodges on the Vietnam Wall

Letters from a Vietnam Vet who was killed in 1969. Old wills from the area of Offerton, Stockport, England in the process of being translated. A couple of them are now available.

The text in the Old Documents is being typed and that text is linked to each old document to make it easier to understand what is written. This is being done by a member of the Dodge Family Assication who has volunteered for this project. WE owe her a big debt of gratitude. We have also retrieved, from England, a good number of old wills of Dodges who lived in northern England in the areas of Stockport, Bosden, etc. These are very old, one in particular is dated in the 1500s. That one may not be able to be understood at all. Another DFA member is now typing the text of these wills, and as each one is finished, you will be able to read these in pdf format.

Access to our Cemetery pages, has been totally redone. Let us know what you think of this format.  There was very much to wade through on the old Cemetery Index page and we have broken each group of cemeteries by state making it easier (we think) to navigate. Don't forget that we are always looking for people to take photos of Dodge gravestones in cemeteries we do not already have.

There is much on this web site and we do hope you take a few hours...not neccessarily all at once (smile)... to see everything that is here.  We also have a lot to add and always enjoy receiving items from our readers to add here, and/or to put in our Dodge Journal which is 6 pages that comes out every two months.

We are looking for Jane Bruer who contacted us several years ago looking for the Ancestry of Rufus Dodge who changed his name to Dexter. We have found that information but Jane Bruer's e-mail address is no longer valid.

Oct. 19, 2003 - NOTICE: We are looking for someone who would be willing, and committed, to doing some research in Connecticut for us. That person will receive a free membership in The Dodge Family Association. If you are that person, please contact us. We also need someone who could do some research in the Mohawk Valley of New York receiving a free membership for that effort.

David Brien Dodge was adopted by a family with the surname 'Thiebold'. David wants to find his Dodge ancestry. Does anyone know anything about David's background? Please contact us here at the DodgeFamily Association.

We have a wonderful new link for a web site that has a page entitled, "American Colonist's Library" You will find here every kind of historical document you ever wanted to see! It is indeed A Wonderful Place!

We have added more photos. Some of these we can tie in to Dodges in our data base, and others we cannot. Some have names and the names of others are unknown. Perhaps some of these are your ancestors. Take a look and let us know if you have any photos of these same people.

We have added a link that will be interesting to Tristram Dodge Descendents. Go to the 'links' page to see that.

There is a Dodge Cemetery in Sutton, Massachusetts and one of our DFA members has sent us a few photos plus a MAP of how to get to this cemetery and another cemetery in Sutton that has Dodges buried in it. To access these, click on Cemetery Headstones at the top of any page.

Look at our Vital Records section. We have various documents from Lincoln County, Wiscasset, Maine that are now available for your perusal. We have more documents to add and will do so as time permits. We also have a lot of odds and ends from the Midwest states.

We have had some very interesting items sent to us in the last two months and as time allows, (and it doesn't seem to allow MUCH!) we will be posting these things on our web site, and the notice of when that is done, will be on this page. Remember that we can only post new Dodge news, if YOU send it to us!

Another mystery has been solved, that of Amos Dodge and Sarah N. Ritterbush parents have been found. They are Amos Dodge And Sally Clark who were married18 Feb 1796, Johnson, Lamoille Co., Vermont. This Dodge line is from Richard Dodge who settled in the Salem, MA area in 1638.

New information on the grandmother of Ireneus Bruce Dodge. View the Ruddock Papers.

A great breakthrough in one of our long time mysteries, that of Henry Dodge and Lourena/Laurena Jolly. Henry Dodge was the son of Josiah Dodge and DrusillaHendricks. There may be other children of this union as there was a 13 year period from the time that Josiah married Drusilla, and the marriage to his 2nd wife, Ann George (who had been married to John Cox for her first husband) All of the new information on this family and descendents is too much to put here in our bulletin section but will be soon added to our pages regarding this family. In the meantime, read information about this family and why we THOUGHT that this scenario might be the end result. Also, read about another mystery family that we believe is also part of this very large and prolific group.

We are looking for a male surname DODGE descendent of Thomas Dodge who married Elizabeth Manning. They had five children but only one was male, Thomas H. Dodge who married Deborah Towne Brickett. If you are, or know of, a male Dodge in this line, please contact us.

We have added a new link on our LINKS page. It is to the John Fairfield web site. John Fairfield was from Wenham, Massachusetts, and the photo on the home page of the site is the church that was connected to Richard Dodge. Several Dodges married Fairfields.

Once again, Halliday Hill House, our Dodge Ancestral Home is being threatened by a proposed highway. This time, the house itself will not be destroyed, BUT one of the outbuildings will be and this motorway will come very close to the house. I have been to Halliday Hill House, and aside from it's age, dating back to the early 1400s', part of it's charm is that it is a bit of country tucked away on a hillside atop a long dirt drive that is bordered on each side by big trees. The outbuildings of Halliday Hill House are close to the house itself and destroying one of these in order to put in a motorway will bring that motorway very close to the house and will ruin forever the wonderful ambience afforded this site. In fact, when you visit Halliday Hill House, you can almost feel as if you have been thrust back in time, and you can understand what it was like for the Dodges who lived here. To the left of the dirt road leading up to the house is a stream and putting in this motorway will also damage the habitats of badgers, great crested newts, otters, 61 species of birds - many rare - and much, much more.

This ambience will forever be destroyed if this plan goes through. No longer will Halliday Hill House be a quiet refuge from today's busy world for those who visit it, but instead there will be the noise and pollution of traffic as it whizes by...and believe me...the traffic does 'whiz' in England just as it does here.

For a number of years now, the house and land has been very lovingly cared for by Mike and Julie Wilson who live there and who always welcome Dodges when they wish to visit the house.

There is a web site that has been started to try to help prevent this obscene plan. It is:www.StoptheRoad.org.uk

Looking for the family of Edward Ray Dodge who was lost during the Vietnam War. We have been contacted by someone who has a MIA bracelet with Edward's name and he would like to give it to the family of Edward. If you can help us locate this family, please contact us. You can find information about Edward Ray Dodge on the Vietnam Memorial web site.

We are looking for descendants of John Bigelow Dodge who moved to England in 1915. We have quite a biography for him. If you know anything about him, his children, or his grandchildren, please contact Tim Carroll: timcarroll@onetel.net.uk

We are looking for Biff Dodge, a Tristram Descendent, who entered a request at Family Tree DNA, to join in the testing. Please contact Phil Slinger with your full name, and postal address.

We are looking for DODGE surname males willing to do the DNA tests who are descendants of the following mystery Dodge lines: John Ellison Dodge; Charles Oliver Dodge; Benjamin Dodge who was the husband of Tabitha Dodge. This test will help to point the way to the Dodge line from which they descend. Please contact us.

A DFA member has very kindly typed the text (to the best of anyone's ability) to these Old Documents and those text files will be linked in pdf format. We have also retrieved, from England, a good number of old wills of Dodges who lived in northern England in the areas of Stockport, Bosden, etc. These are very old, one in particular is dated in the 1500s. That one may not be able to be understood at all. Another DFA member is now typing the text of these wills, and when they are ready, you will be able to read these in pdf format.

There was a threat to Halliday Hill House once again. The outbuildings were going to be demolished and land taken for a motorway that would be below the hill thus destroying the ambience of that area. As we understand it, a big Sainsburys ( local grocery store similar to Safeway) was going to be built on that motorway and would be seen from the Halliday Hill land. It appears now that lack of funds, and/or other reasons are going to put this on hold and perhaps the plan will die. That is good news.

There is much on this web site and we do hope you take a few hours...not necessarily all at once (smile)... to see everything that is here. We also have a lot to add and always enjoy receiving items from our readers to add here, and/or to put in our Dodge Journal which is 6 pages that comes out every two months.

New Cemetery headstone pages.Carr Cemetery, Marcy, New York: Pine Cemetery, Portville, New York; Forest Lawn Cemetery, Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Also the will of Rufus Dodge of Winfield, Herkimer Co., New York.

We update the DNA results each time that a new result is received. These are viewable in pdf format. Go to our DNA Project page .

For some time now, one of our Genealogy researchers has had a notice on our website about his visit to the Vietnam Wall and his search for information on the seven Dodge men whose names are posted there. Just today, December 11, 2004, we received from the sister of one of them, a wonderful article in which she shares memories of her brother.

We are looking for a male Dodge surname descendent of John Ellison Dodge who is willing to be DNA tested. WE WILL TAKE CARE OF THE FULL COST. Would a male DODGE descendent of John Ellison Dodge PLEASE, PLEASE contact us about this so that we may make arrangements with familytreedna about the cost. We will put the money in the fund there BEFORE you sign up for the test. Please contact us if you are willing to help in this way.

We believe there may be a tie between two families who lived in Massena, NY at the same time: The Shubal Dodge family and the John Ellison Dodge family. DNA has proved that Shubal Dodge is a descendent of Tristram Dodge. Shubal is supposed to have had, among his children, 3 daughters: Jerusha Dodge who married a surname Ellison, Lucy Dodge, b. 27 Mar 1809 in Canada married George Hennigan, b. 14 Sep 1801 in Canada and Maria Dodge. We have several named children in our Mystery data base for Shubal and 2 unnamed daughters. Can anyone prove that the above 3 daughters are Shubal's children? If so, then the fact that one of them married a surname Ellison points to a possible close connection between these two families.

Also of interest .... Jerusha's daughter Dienna Ellison married Lucy's son David Hennigan. They were first cousins.

Leonard van Hulst of The Netherlands is looking for a Priscilla Dodge, whom he met in Gstaad, while studying Switzerland, in 1967/1968. If anyone has information on Priscilla, please contact us, and we will put you in touch with Leonard.

We have now received test results from several Dodges who live in the area of southwest England. In all cases, they prove to be from the same Dodge line as those descendents of William and Richard who live in this country. Their brother Michael stayed in England so these Dodges could very well have descended from him, OR from a sibling of John, the father. Since we have never received any information regarding the family of the father, John Dodge, we do not know if, or how many siblings he may have had. It would behoove our English Dodge members if one or more would take it upon themselves to do some research on this John Dodge family. John lived in Middle Chinnock, Somersetshire. We have received the will of John Dodge of Middle Chinnock, and may have it on our web site at some point. It will definitely be in our next Dodge Journal.

DNA - We have also received the results of a Dodge who lives in Offerton, Stockport, England and he appears to definitely be a descendent in the same family as Tristram Dodge who settled in America. His DNA ties in very nicely, also, with that of our New Zealand Dodge who was tested several months ago.

Lena Evans is trying to locate information regarding a Dr. Dodge, first name unknown, who practiced medicine in the Coventry, Norwich, Greene, New York area in the late 1930's, early 1940's. If you have any information regarding this person, please contact her at LEvan@stny.rr.com

We are looking for residents of Stockport and surrounding communities who have the surnames of DODGE, DODGSON, DODSON, DOGGE, DOGG, and other names that fit the profile including DOIDGE to submit DNA so that we can see how these various names fit the DODGE profile.

We have received the test results for 25 markers of a Dodge Family Association Member who lives in New Zealand, and whose ancestry goes back to Stockport, England, proved by 25 years of research. His test results show a strong relationship to the Tristram Dodge branch of Dodges in this country. This seems to definitely point to Tristram Dodge descending from a Dodge in Northern England, and at some point a number of hundreds of years ago, he would have had the same ancestor as our Dodge member from New Zealand.

Indiana census records for 1850 transcribed by one of our members who lives in Indiana

Selwin A. Dodge was one of the founders of the Lyon's Club 'Leader Dogs for the Blind'. His father was Edgar Dodge. His ancestry has now been found.

Diadamus (and variant spellings) only found in one Dodge family, that of Rev. Josiah Dodge from the Tristram Dodge line. Can a link be found between that family and the mysterious E. Louis Dodge?

THIS HAS BEEN SOLVED! Another family that may be linked to the Rev. Josiah Rogers Dodge family in the Tristram Dodge line. We have, at long last, photos of Henry Dodge who married Lourena Jolly. Henry was from Harding County, Kentucky but no one was able to trace his ancestry back, but we have now found the ancestry of Henry and his family. View these very interesting photos,

Cemetery photos from Ashtabula, Ohio. This family is in our mystery file. Can anyone help us find the ancestors< of Rev. Eusibius Dodge.

We have a request for a Joseph Dodge on the World Dodge requests page.

Four photographs: Photo from 1948 of Bert John Dodge and his children who descended from Tristram Dodge; two photographs of Hiram Marcus Dodge, a Pinkerton Railroad detective who descended from Richard Dodge; a photo of Hiram Bowen Dodge, descendant of Tristram; and a 4 generation photo of the husband and descendants of Emaline Amanda Dodge, Tristram line.

Narrative for Asahel Dodge of Lee, Massachusetts. WHO was his father?

Photos: Kate Hannah Dodge, born in Kansas married William Wallace Glasspoole. Take a look at the group photos. They are all Dodges, siblings of Kate Hannah. Kate descended from David E. Dodge and Maria Cole. (In our mystery file)

Read about Luther and his family, and view wonderful old photos, including one of a Stoaks/Dodge Reunion in 1897.

Joel Palmer Dodge's grandfather was Benjamin Dodge, who married Tabitha Dodge. We have Tabitha's ancestry to Tristram and DNA proves that the ancestry of Benjamin is also from Tristram but his parentage is unknown. We believe the 'Palmer' name is from Benjamin's ancestry, as it does not appear in Tabitha's. If YOU can find the ancestry of Benjamin for us, we will give you a two year membership in the Dodge Family Association.

Photos of some of the Dodge family of East Coker. These Dodges probably descended from Michael Dodge who was a brother of William and Richard who came to this country in the 1600s. Michael stayed in England. These photos and much additional information was sent to us by an enthusiastic new member from England, David Dodge of Wiltshire. As time permits, more will be added to these pages.

Jim Bailey of Rhode Island is working at documenting all of the Dodges from Block Island. Many of them were not included in the Tristram Genealogy by Theron Royal Woodward. When he has completed this work, many more names will be added to the Tristram data.

Information regarding the copyrighting of Genealogy data: The copyright belongs to the individual or organization that first fixes the document. Giving it to Family Tree Maker or other groups does not transfer the copyright to them. However, there is no copyright on the information itself. Hence, FTM or any other group can redistribute it themselves as information. Evidently, we are gathers of "non-protected facts" ...but if we weave such facts into originally authored works, it becomes protected automatically by copyright laws. To make something that will stand up in court, however, two examples have to be delivered to the copyright office, their forms must be completed, and any money due for fees must be paid.

We are looking for JaneBruer who contacted us several years ago looking for the Ancestry of Rufus Dodge who changed his name to Dexter. We have found that information but Jane Bruer's e-mail address is no longer valid.

PLEASE FOLKS, when your e-mail address changes, LET US KNOW! Unless you are a member of our Association, we have no way of contacting you. AS you can see, we never stop looking for your Dodge ancestry, whether or not you are a member. When we find something that will help you we need to be able to contact you with that information.

The Dodge Family Association is offering a FREE LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP to whoever will do the research and PROVE the ancestry of Tristram Dodge. We have him settling in Block Island in 1660/61and we know he was in Massachusetts for at least some time. We have a special page with questions we would like answered, and information that might possibly be pertinent. If you think you might be interested in researching this for us, please contact BarbDodge.

Jim Bailey of Rhode Island is working at documenting all of the Dodges from Block Island. Many of them were not included in the Tristram Genealogy by Theron Royal Woodward. When he has completed this work, many more names will be added to the Tristram data.

We have reorganized and added to our 'History' section. We have made a new Index page for this section which, hopefully, will make it easier for you to find items. We will be adding even more items to this section over the next several weeks. Be sure to check back from time to time so that you do not miss anything.

We have been working on adding interesting items to our web site and we still have much to add. However, we now have ready for your viewing32 photographs from an old photo album which we received some time ago from a member in Arkansas. A very interesting thing is that one of the pictures in this album is identical to one of the pictures in the Florida Photo Album (see below). Twenty of the photographs are identified by name although we cannot yet tie them to a Dodge line. We hope that you who view these photos may be able to give us a clue as to which Dodge line they belong. Twelve of the photos have no name attached so are considered 'mystery' photos. Very possibly, one of our viewers will see someone they recognize. Pleasecontact us if that is the case.

Our Florida Photo Album that had photos of unknown (to us) Dodges from Montpelier, Vermont and moved from our unknown photo section to the section that contains photos of people whose Dodge connections are known to us. To see these photos identified click here.

We have found the link between our mystery file on Nathaniel and HannaC. and the Tristram Dodge line. The information on Nathaniel T. Dodge is now incorporated into our Tristram file on our web site and we will be taking this off of our mystery page. It is truly exciting to find this link after so many years of searching. We have also been able to find full lines for several people and many partial lines for a number of people, also. Genealogy is coming in at a very fast rate and the more genealogy that we receive the better we are able to help those who ask us for help. As the word gets out about us, more and more people contact us regarding their genealogy and thus we have the ability to collect even more genealogy. It is a circle that is never ending.

And, again, just two days ago, we received a line of genealogy from a Benjamin and Martha Dodge for whom we only knew of one child. Now we find out there were 10 children. Once this data is processed (which will probably be another couple of weeks) it will help us to make connections with some people who are still searching for their Dodge ancestors.

Here is a link to read an article written in 1998 about Retired United Methodist Bishop RalphE. Dodge, a former missionary to Angola. He was elected bishop in 1956 by the Africa Central Conference and was the only American Methodist missionary ever elected bishop by the African Methodist Church in the colonial territories of Angola, Mozambique, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). He served as bishop for eight years before being expelled from the country in 1964. He was re-elected in exile and served another four years before retiring.

Obed/Obediah, 1810-1840 in Brownsville Jefferson Co NY (in 1846 & 1847 - he sold land there to a William Dodge) To see more info on this line click here.

David Elisha Dodge . . . in ONE day, we have found THREE people who have connections with David Elisha Dodge. Two of them are members of the Dodge Family Association. There is another person also who has genealogy from this line on their web site. We have many requests from people who are stuck with their Dodge genealogy. Not all of the requests are posted yet. If you are interested in looking at what we DO have posted, click here.

Tristram Dodge - for an interesting tidbit, click here.

From Duane Jones, one of our Dodge Association members we received the following regarding descendants in the Tristram "I e-mailed you a few days ago about Major Oliver Dodge who married Abigail Harris. I believe with a great amount of certainty that Abigail(Harris) Dodge's ggg grandmother was Katherine Washington who married Thomas Stanton, one of the founders of Hartford, Connecticut. This Katherine Washington's father was Walter Washington, brother of Lawrence Washington, who was George Washington's ggg grandfather. The Washingtons go back several hundred years in England; then, back to Scotland. If you want to know, I have been able to trace Abigail (Harris) Dodge's father and mother to be Jonathan and Rachel (Ottis) Harris. Jonathan Harris's father and mother were Capt. or Lt. James Harris who married Sarah Rogers. Sarah Rogers's father and mother were Samuel and Mary (Stanton) Rogers. Mary Stanton's father and mother were Thomas and Ann (Lord) Stanton. Thomas Stanton's father and mother were Thomas Stanton, Sr. and Katherine Washington. I have become more confident with this line from Abigail Harris who married Oliver Dodge since I found in Burke's Landed Gentry book of American families, which I found at the Wichita Public Library, Dept. of Genealogy, a listing on page 2960, yes it is a very big book, "Katherine, m. 30 July 1616, Thomas Staunton, of [some name with a Hall in it], co. Warwick. I nearly fell over since Thomas Stanton was a founder of Hartford, Connecticut along with Thomas Lord, father of Thomas Stanton, Jr.'s wife, Ann Lord. The family is very well documented.
I don't know if any other people who have descended from Oliver and Abigail (Harris) Dodge know if this is correct." [If you have any information that would be of interest to Duane, please e-mailhim]

A NEW section of our Web site is OBITUARIES. Right now, we plan to only post Dodge obituaries that are very old. These will be posted as they are received by us from members and non-members.

We have a mystery regarding Aaron and Lydia Dodge, born in Wiscasset, Maine, in the late 1700's. A descendant writes: "It is in the biographies of the Ball family (mother Lydia Dodge) in Steuben Co, IN. Later moved to western New York State. The children of Gideon Ball 4th and Lydia Dodge are written in Grandfathers Gideon's own hand. There were 9. Lydia Dodge's slim history is given by two of her sons in the History of Steuben County, Indiana where she and her husband, Gideon Ball 4th moved in about 1835. Lydia's sons stated that she had been born in Wiscasset, Maine on 6 July, 1794, and removed with her parents to Ontario County, New York when a child. This from the information from Augustus V. Ball. Son Edwin tells that his mother was born in Wicasset, Maine and taken to Ontario County while yet a little girl. What age she might have been at the time they moved is undetermined. The marriage of Gideon Ball and Lydia Dodge was found in "10,000 is vital records of Western New York", a book at our library. They married in 1814. While searching the net for information on Ontario County last year, I came across a website RAIMS.com, which is a very elaborate site for Ontario County. I quickly sent for the marriage information on Lydia Dodge and Gideon Ball 4th, only to be sent a letter stating that New York State did not keep such records until the 1880's. [If you can help with this mystery please e-mail us.] We now know much more information about Aaron.

Craig Dodge, our keeper of "England and other countries excluding Canada and the US" genealogy, has finally moved to Australia. Once he gets set up with an internet provider, he will be able to receive your genealogy. He will accept all, no matter how few people are in it, and whether ornot it ties in to other genealogy we have posted on the England page. Craig has also started writing his own column for our Dodge Family Journal. His focus will be in International Dodges (outside the U.S.) We are posting his very first column, here on our Web Site. To view this column, click here.

We now have more back issues of our Newletter posted. TO view these click here.

TASMANIAN DODGES

Richard A. Dodge writes: Here is some interesting stuff on the Tasmanian Dodges. When I last visited Hobart, I came across a plac called Dodge's Ferry. I was never brave enough to research the origins of the name because it is very close to the old convict settlement at Port Arthur. Strangely, Australians are proud of their convict ancestry because the convicts were the first people to settle in Australia. And it is somewhat similar to the pride one feels by linking their ancestry to the earliest religious refugees in America. (sic) Richard the Puritan. (c1602-1671) My adult children now live in Brisbane and Melbourne. They will be interested to know that they have namesakes who settled in Norfolk Island and in the state of Tasmania. However I must stress that there is no obvious link between the ancestry of Robert Dodge (1722-1794) and the descendants of Richard Dodge (c1602-1671).

OUR GENEALOGY DEPARTMENT has once again, solved someone's dilemma in finding a lost Dodge ancestor. If you have genealogy that you have not shared with us, now is the time to do that. Each week, we are successful in helping someone by filling in for them a missing Dodge. The more that we receive from you, the better we are able to help others AND yourself.

DWIGHT DODGE of Quesnel, BC has sent us a poem that he wrote in 1995 regarding our Coat of Arms. To read it, click here.

One of the members of the DFA sent us an article that should be of interest to all women.

Those of you who have joined us on one of our last 2 tours to England, may like to know that our coach driver, Roger Wragg, now has e-mail and sent us a Holiday greeting. Would you like to e-mail Roger?

DO YOU WANT A FREE MEMBERSHIP IN THE DODGE FAMILY ASSOCIATION? If so, all you have to do is volunteer to do research of the cities, towns and counties Vital Records in your state. Please contactus if you are interested. We are especially interested in Bennington, Vermont, Vital Records. We have a lot of Dodge ancestors from that area and it appears that there was quite a group of descendants of Tristram that migrated there.

We have a page posted for WilliamHenry Dodge complete with three photos. We are looking for the genealogy for this Dodge and hope, by posting the pictures, that someone will recognize this Dodge and be able to give us further information about him. To see his genealogy, click here. These are two different links. Be sure to look at both of them.

We now have 4 pages of cemetery headstones from the Dodge cemetery in Jericho, Long Island, New York. We believe these to be from the Tristram Dodge line. There are other surnames there also, and in each instance it is because they have married into the Dodge line

We are starting to receive requests for help with Dodge ancestors from people living in England. We now have a link from our England Dodges page to a page listing those requests. We are asking all of you who are interested in helping others, regardless of what country you live in, to check this page often for new requests. The first two requests listed are Dodges that possibly have descendants in the U.S. or Canada.

We have received photos and tintypes from this Dodge Bible. Some of the photos have names and some do not. However, in both cases, we do not know to what Dodge family or line these photos come from. We are in hopes that by posting them here, you may be able to help us identify them. Clickhere to go to the cover page. From there, it will easy for you to access all of the pages of photos.

On October trip to the east coast, we spent some time with Everett and Rebecca Dodge in Greenlawn, NY. While there doing Dodge research into the Tristram Dodge line, we came across a number of surnames "Weeks". John's mother was Hannah Weeks from CT, and his father was John Dodge from NH. There were marriages between members of the Tristram Dodge line and the 'Weeks' line. We will be doing research to see how this John Weeks Dodge fits in. It may take awhile but if you are interested, watch here for the results. If you have any information that may help us, we would appreciate receiving that information.

"Just before the Civil War members of our family can be traced to the upper Hudson River valley near Poughkeepsie, New York where my great grandfather James C. Dodge and his four brothers started to build stone buildings as contractors. They did masonry projects, usually for New York and Massachusetts towns and cities, including several churches. They did significant stonework in the 1890's at Vassar, Williams and Smith colleges. They worked on some projects together, sometimes separately. With the Depression everything changed.

When my father Harold O. Dodge inherited Dodge Construction Company(founded in 1865 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts) he was a general contractor who began to use air compressors and heavy equipment in underground utility work in western Massachusetts. My older brother Hascal O. Dodge took over the company when our Dad passed on. He recently sold the company and its name.

Many of the stone structures built by my great grandfather and great uncles stand today. The Bell Tower in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, built by the Dodges, was made famous by artist Norman Rockwell.

The old homestead of David Dodge in Cape Vincent, NY is now a very nice B&B owned by a Sally Boss. With her permission I went into the woods, and found the old grave site of my early Dodges. It is in such bad shape, it will not last too much longer. The trees are following down around and on top, most of the stones are broken and it is almost impossible to know just how many are buried there. I am not familiar with the laws of NY State, and I am sure the cost would be out of my range to have this small cemetery fixed. (I don't think that Sally would mind it being repaired). I can't even photograph the remaining stones because the trees are so thick. Maybe you have a Dodge member from the State of NY, who would be able to find out if there are any government agencies who help in restoring old cemeteries. Please e-mail if you can help with this request.

Is there anyone out there who would be willing to help with this projector who would know where this member can receive help in restoring this cemetery.

We are starting to get responses to our new ENGLAND page from Dodges who live in that country. We will be collecting genealogy from those Dodges as they offer it to us, and in time this will benefit Dodges who live in all countries.

We recently found out that most of the landfill for the Port of Miami, including berths for all those top-heavy cruise ships is named the Dodge Islands. In the 1950s, the director of municipal planning for Miami, at a loss for a name, fell back on two visitors, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Dodge. This 'legend' according to the state library in Tallahassee does not say where those Dodges came from. We are thinking that this might have been the Ray Dodge who designed the Oscar. Does anyone have an answer to this puzzle?

A DFA member has let us know that she is related to the John Weeks Dodge that we have posted in our Mystery area. The article about John Weeks Dodge will be transferred very soon to our 'History' area. We now have his line going all the way back to one of the first two Dodge Brothers who came to this country.

We have a brand new member of the Association who traces his ancestry to New Boston, New Hampshire and his relatives still own at least one of the Dodge homes in New Boston. There is still a Dodge General Store there. He sent us a link to an interesting web site. Clickhere.

The photos from the January California reunion are now available. They are done in a collage which is 470 k but worthwhile seeing, I think!

DFA member, Ray Dodge, Belgium, sent us the following link: http://yard.ccta.gov.uk/cwgc/register.nsf   We are putting this link on one of our LINKS pages also. This link will take you to the DEBT OF HONOUR REGISTER. To see a memorial about a Dodge from the U.S., click here.
