John Locke DODGE, of Barton Landing [Orleans County, Vermont; in 1909 its name changed from Barton Landing to Orleans] was born 21 October 1833 in Irasburg [Orleans County, Vermont], son of William p. and Nancy L. (LOCKE) DODGE. His educational advantages were limited to the common schools and the academics of Derby ["Derby" is in Essex County; author means "Derby Center" or "Derby Line" in Orleans County?] and Brownington [Orleans County]. When nineteen years of age, he commenced his active career as a teacher, but three years later was seized with the western fever and went West, where he engaged in the hotel business, but returned to his native state in 1860, and has been since that year a Vermont farmer. Republican. For twenty-five years has been entrusted with many official responsibilities by both the town and county and has most creditably discharged these duties. In 1892 represented Irasburg in the Legislature. An earnest supporter of the Congregational church in Irasburg, and has contributed by his influence and energy to its success. Stands high in the esteem of his fellows and can boast of a useful life. On 15 October he [John Locke DODGE] was married to Sarah Jane, daughter of Hiram and Ruth (COGSWELL) MERRILL, by whom he has one son, Carlos A.
