We are looking for help in finding the ancestry of Benjamin Dodge who married Tabitha Dodge
of the Tristram line, and have received more information on this Benjamin Dodge. If you own the Tristram Dodge genealogy by Theron Royal Woodward, you will see this line on page 173. DNA from a Dodge descendant has proved that Benjamin descends from Tristram Dodge. 'Palmer' is obviously a 'family' name from Benjamin and Tabitha down through their descendants. A son of Benjamin and Tabitha was named Joel p. Dodge. We believe the 'p' stands for 'Palmer'. In tracing Tabitha's line backwards, we can find no mention of a Palmer either as a surname for one of the women, or as a child's name. However, Joel p. Dodge, son of Benjamin and Tabitha named one of his sons, Joel Palmer Dodge, and named another son 'Palmer'. In turn, Joel Palmer Dodge, named one of his son's Sidney Palmer Dodge, and a daughter of Joel Palmer Dodge, Mary Elizabeth Dodge who married Allen T. Knepper, named one of her daughters, Holly Palmer Knepper. Another fact is that a daughter of Benjamin and Tabitha, Abigail, b. 1779, married in Bennington, Vermont in 1797, a Thomas Palmer. A son of Benjamin and Tabitha, Libbeus, married a lady in Bennington, Vermont in 1773. What were they doing in Bennington, Vermont? They were from Connecticut! It is our thought that Benjamin Dodge might have been born in Vermont someplace...possibly even in Bennington. And we also think that he may have been related to the Palmers of Bennington, Vermont, and that that is how the 'family name' of 'Palmer' came into this family. Another fact is that a George W. Dodge was found living next door to Luther Palmer Dodge, and there was a George W. Dodge, b. May 1818, son of Russell Dodge who was another son of Benjamin and Tabitha. The time frame for this George W. Dodge fits exactly with the age given in the census but THIS George W. Dodge dies as an infant. WHO then, is the George W. Dodge that lived nest door to Luther? Could he be the child of a brother of the deceased George W. ? Joel Palmer Dodge also had a daughter, Clara E. Dodge who was born about 1860. Could this be the Clara Dodge who is pictured on the page about Luther Palmer Dodge? We have noticed another very interesting thing about this line of Dodges. We now go back a brother of Tabitha,Seth Dodge, who married Deborah Lawrence. They had 9 children, and all of the children except for one, Ira, were born in Vermont, and for the child, Samantha, it actually gives the place as Bennington, Vermont. She was born 1808. Could this be the Samantha that is found on the Luther Palmer Dodge page? ... or... could that Samantha have been named after this Samantha? When reading the information in the block below, please keep all of the above in your mind. You will see that these families must have kept quite a close contact with each other in spite of the number of children. We have all of the information about the people below, and the dates are correct. What we need now, is research in Vermont - Who were the parents of Benjamin Dodge? HOW does he fit in to a family with a surname of "Palmer"? If you have not already done it, when you are done reading this page, please read the page on Luther Palmer Dodge.
