First Generation

1. Henry DODGE was born on 23 Dec 1813 in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., Kentucky, died on 18 Oct 1894 in Hamiliton, Hancock Co., Ill. and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Hamilton, Illinois.

General Notes:Obituary (probably from Hamilton Press, Illinois)

" The funeral of the venerable Henry Dodge, father of Dr. T. J. Dodge, took place at the Dodge residence Friday afternoon. The deceased was a Kentuckian, having been born in Elizabethtown, Hardin County, in that state, December 23, 1813, and was at the time of his death aged 80 years, 2 months and 5 days. Leaving Kentucky he settled at Beardstown, this state, and there in 1833 was married to Miss Lourena Jolly. The fruit of this union was nine children, of which but three survive. Of these Dr. Dodge, of this city, and Mrs. Louisa Staley, of Butler, MO.,were present at their father's death bed, the third child, Mrs. Mary Atwater, of Dallas, Texas, being unable to attend. The deceased was the oldest of four brothers, and is survived by the remaining three."

Note- Henry would have been 80 years, 9 months and 26 days at the time of his death.

1 free white female 20 to 30

There is a category near the end that reads "Persons over 18, and
under 45 years of age, subject to military duty." Although Henry is a male in the correct age range, that space has been left blank on Henry's entry. It had been checked off on most of the other males, but Henry's entry was the last one on the page. Was there a reason it wasn't checked off, or was the census taker just tired or in a hurry?

General Notes:Sherman T Dodge was a Dr. He had worked at the Riverside Sanitarium in the Hamilton Il area, as had his father, Thomas J. Dodge. The Riverside Sanitarium had burned down around 1900. Dr. Dodge's family was living in St. Louis during the World's Fair there in 1904. Dr. Dodge met another Dr. from Corpus Christi, Texas who told him that doctors were needed in Texas. Dr. Dodge and his wife went to Texas to check it out. He really liked the water and the fishing, so they stayed.
Sherman's middle name starts with a T, but has been reported as both Tecumseh and Thomas. His granddaughters, who were taken care of by their grandma, Mary Pence Dodge, for a number of years following the death of their mother, clearly remember being told that Sherman's middle name was Thomas, after his father. Have not found any documents with anything other than a T, so far.
