Tristram Memorial Marker, Block Island
Below is a letter received by the Dodge Famly Association from a Tristram Dodge descendant.

I am a descendant of Tristram Dodge of Block Island, Rhode Island. A few years ago I took a trip with my daughter to Block Island and we scanned the cemetery for ancestors. We came to Tristram and Ann's burial site. There is a huge headstone with the children's names listed:
John ,(my ancestor), Trustrum, William, Isreal, Margaret and Ann. [note spelling Irsael, not IsrEAL]
It's not a headstone... it's a memorial marker placed there by Lester E.
DODGE sometime in the 1900s (don't know exactly when but his parents were
     Uriah B. DODGE b. 1850 & Emeline b 1849)
Unfortunately, it has wrong info on it. Margaret was an ACRES not a DODGE. She m John RATHBONE, and was the sister of John ACRES. Ann, it's not been proved she was a daughter of Tristram, she MAY have been the widow of Tristram's son Thomas.
Lester - left off son Thomas and daughter Amy.

I do not have the birth years of any except John, which was 1647 Block Island d. 1729. John was not born on Block Island. The Isle wasn't settled until 1661.

Tristram was recorded at Ferryland, Newfoundland in 1648, so John MAY have been b there, but it's unknown when Tristram actually moved his family from England.

Some of the fisherman would fish the Grand Banks during the season and return with their loads of cured fish to England. Some accounts say John (& other brother) arrived on the Island abt 1667.

Tristrams' children Amy & Thomas DODGE

5. Amy, b c1652 m(1) Daniel BRIGGS; ?m(2) Josiah HELLING. She is not listed in her father's will of 1683.

6. Thomas, b c1658* [he was made Freeman 1680, being at least ae22]. His name appears in the Block Island town records in 1680, 1681 and 1682, then no more mention of him is made. He is not listed in his father's will of 1683. He may have d late 1682 or left the island like his brother Israel, both being implicated with their father in the sheep stealing incident (in 1681 I believe). (possibly daughter) Ann, b aft 1664*, d aft 1723 (she MAY instead be the widow of Thomas above, although no record of a marriage for him has been found.) m 11 Nov 1686 Kingstowne, RI to John RATHBUN Jr, b. c1655 ?Dorchester, Suffolk co. MA, d 1723 Block Island, son of John RATHBONE/RATHBUN & Margaret ACRES who were immigrants & original Block Island settlers.

Children (RATHBUN): Mercy b 1688; Jonathan; John; Joshua; Benjamin; Anna; Nathaniel; Thomas, b 1709. [* She was having children until 1709 - 45yrs = 1664]

NOTE: The daughter Margaret DODGE listed in Woodward's DODGE Gen. (p 6) was not the daughter of Tristrum, nor even a DODGE at all. As noted above she was instead an ACRES/ACCURS, being the sister of John ACRES, who was another Block Island settler. She was baptized 15 Sep 1633 Prescot Parrish, Lancashire, England, daughter of Thomas & Margery (HOUGHTON) ACRES of Whiston. [The name is spelled in the records as many variations: Accars, Accurs, Acker, Ackers, Ackkers] (btw, John ACRES was baptized there 20 Feb 1635/36)

This info came from Cooley's 1896/98 RATHBONE Gen., which is full of errors major & minor. Refering to Woodward's (p 6) recit of Cooley, note that the John-3 RATHBONE (John-2 Richard-1), was REALLY John-1 RATHBONE/RATHBUN (Thomas Thomas William) and he was NOT b 1634, he was bap 28 Mar 1629 at Farnworth Chapel, Ditton, Lancashire, England, the son of Thomas Jr. & Alice (__?__-CHILDWALL) RATHBONE.
John, the immigrant, died on Block Island about Sep 1702.
