The oldest Baptist Church in America was established by Roger Williams in Providence, Rhode Island.The building is situated across the street from the Providence Art Club which is housed in two homes built by Seril Dodge in the late 1700s. The original building burned and was rebuilt. The Baptist Meeting House was started in 1774 and was designed to hold 1400 people, about half of the population of Providence, RI. at the time. The above engraving was done by Samuel Hill and was published in the 1789 issue of Massachusetts Magazine. |
